I Hear the Music…

July 24, 2015 By GuitarDaddy

I came across this image a few days ago and it really spoke to me about how each of us have our own unique and individual love of music.

We all gather here (I assume) because we all love to play the guitar.  We play blues, rock, jazz, country, metal, acoustic, electric and bass.  We are all uniquely different but share a common passion for the same instrument.

For me, the music of Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Gary Clark Jr. speak to me the most. I hear it loud and clear!

Be careful not to fall into a “genre trap” and block out other music styles!

Writing this blog has opened my eyes to many new artists that I may once have shut my ears to. But no more! I want to hear it all.

Jeff Beck Band and Billy Gibbons play “Foxy Lady”

April 4, 2014 By GuitarDaddy

Jeff Beck and ZZ Top have announced a joint North American tour that will kick off in August.

According to a press release, the shows will begin with a full Beck set, followed by a full ZZ Top set, followed by a finale that will find Beck and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons on stage at the same time.

Beck added: “Ever since Eliminator, I thought it would be great to play with ZZ Top.” We went on to call Gibbons “the Professor of Grunge.”

Gibbons joined Beck and his band on stage at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where they performed Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxey Lady” (See the video below) and ZZ Top’s “Rough Boy.” The following year, Beck joined ZZ Top in Lucca, Italy, for an extended rendition of “La Grange.”

Check it out…. a match made in heaven?

January 18, 2014 By GuitarDaddy

Joe Walsh Print Named

(01/18/2014) Breaking News from Tom Noll:

I’d like to thank everybody who took the time thinking about my painting, and submitting possible titles. A lot of good ideas came my way from around the globe. And thanks to the GuitarBuzz for hosting & monitoring this event.

One name in particular hit home with me, as it not only described Joe’s playing as I’ve portrayed him in the painting, but also, it described me doing the painting. That name, and the winner, is “In the Zone”, submitted by Diane Blue of Boston, MA, USA.

Diane will be receiving print number 2/250 next week when they start shipping. After making this title decision, and looking up Diane for the contact information, it appears Diane knows all about being “In the Zone” as she’s a fellow musician. Nice call!!

Congrats!!

Thanks to all of you that pre-ordered prints during this contest. For others of you that would like to purchase a print, as of this moment, there are still a few single digit prints available. Contact me and I’ll hook you up.

Until next time, keep on rocking!!

December 31, 2013 By GuitarDaddy

 CONTEST OVER – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Artist Tom Noll has been honing his talent for years in preparation for this masterpiece of the legendary Joe Walsh.

Tom Noll's Sketch of Joe Walsh

Tom Noll’s Sketch of Joe Walsh

Tom says “I am super excited about this project as I’ve followed Joe since his early days. I remember listening to the James Gang back in high school art class, and thinking then, that it would be cool to do a painting of Joe. That was a long time ago…so its well overdue. What a great way to kick off 2014”.

Now, with close to 60 musicians immortalized on canvas, and an international art reputation as the Rock n’ Roll portrait artist, Tom is ready to sink his teeth into this project!

Joe Walsh is a classic American musician who has been a member of three commercially successful bands: the James Gang, Barnstorm, and the Eagles, and holds the number 54 spot in Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Besides being an incredible talent, Joe has a way of poking fun at himself and life’s situations, and his wit is infectious.

As his popular song portrays, “Ordinary Average Guy”, Joe is genuinely likable and people can relate to him like a good friend who’s there when you need a lift & a smile. This new Joe canvas is coming to life, and Tom is ready to share it with a little creative challenge for you!

IN TOM’S WORDS:

“I need a steller name for this painting…something other than just a song title, so I’d like to see your imaginative ideas here on the GuitarBuzz. I’ll pick the name from those submitted, and the person who nails it, will be rewarded with a complimentary limited edition print.

You can follow the painting progress on my website for inspiration by CLICKING HERE.

I’m looking for delivery of prints in late January 2014, so let’s wrap this contest up at midnight Friday, January 17th. I’ll pick a name and announce it Saturday, the next day.

Guitar Music Essay by Harvey Reid

June 20, 2013 By GuitarDaddy

Harvey Reid

Harvey Reid

Harvey Reid has honed his craft over the last 40 years in countless clubs, festivals, streetcorners, cafes, schools and concert halls across the nation. He has been called a “giant of the steel strings” and “one of the true treaures of American acoustic music.” He has absorbed a vast repertoire of American contemporary and roots music and woven it into his own colorful, personal and distinctive style.

His recorded output of over 500 tracks on 27 different recordings, released between 1982 and 2012 on Woodpecker Records make a major statement, and have attracted a great deal of attention in the acoustic music world.

His sparse, unproduced recordings have been discovered by music “purists” worldwide, and showcase his unparalleled mastery of many instruments and styles of acoustic music, from hip folk to slashing slide guitar blues to bluegrass, old-time, celtic, ragtime, and even classical.

Harvey Reid also taught guitar lessons at Davis & Elkins college. What follows here is a reprint of a hand-out he gave to students on their first day of guitar class back in 1992. I came across this masterpiece by total accident while searching the internet for something else…I’m so glad I found Harvey Reid’s web site.

Guitar music is a place where the elements of rhythm, tone, emotions, harmony, melody, poetry, preparation, solitude, friendship, intellect, physical training and spirituality all meet. It involves your spirit, your body, your heart and your mind, and it is both a solitary and a social act. It not only offers the player the pleasure of making music, but it also offers to the skilled the ability to actually change other people’s thoughts and feelings. Just by doing something you love to do, you can impart profound things to others and give them something they value. Those who discover that they have this ability, who feel obliged to develop it and who use it generously, will experience a reward comprising not only the satisfaction of the act itself, but also an abstract pleasure in sharing and communicating with others through the language of music. There is an energy, a sense of purpose and a direction that it imparts to its practitioners that can give a gratifying sense of meaning in what threatens to seem like a meaningless world.

Only through a lifetime of music will you experience an understanding of all the aspects of the art, but a basic awareness and regular reminders of the existence of all these various ingredients that make up music will allow the student to progress more quickly toward a mastery of it. There is, as always, a price to pay, and there are responsibilities that come with having the power to change other’s thoughts and feelings, and not all who set out on this learning path make it all the way through.

The essential element in the study of music is a love of music and an appreciation of its sacredness. Music is not something your hands or your voice do. It is not something your mind does. At its finest it is a transcendental state that involves all parts of you, and allows you to exist on the crest of a wave, in the exact moment of the present as you perform each part of the music. It is only there, in the present that we can truly live and have control over our lives, since the past and future are inaccessible to us. When you are deeply involved in music and when you have control of it, you can experience an excitement and a sense of well-being that is impossible to duplicate. The sensation of the pleasure of music making is the primary thing a student of music must focus on. If enough time is spent in joyous music making and if the desire to share and transmit this feeling is strong and sincere, the hands will train themselves and the voice will find its true expression. One cannot hurry the processp; you must instead enjoy and cherish it as it slowly unfolds. There is an unfettered freedom in being a beginner that you may look back on fondly some day. The desire to be something other than what you are will impede your ability to grow, and the amount of pleasure that music brings is relatively constant. If you are not experiencing that pleasure and fulfillment as a student, then you must learn how to do that before you can go further. The magic that is music comes from such a place inside us. And any beginner can experience these sensations just as easily as the master. If not more easily.

PRS Introduces The P22 Trem Model Guitar

April 18, 2013 By GuitarDaddy

PRESS RELEASE:

PRS P22 Trem

PRS Guitars has introduced the P22 Trem model guitar!

The solidbody piezo-equipped P22 Trem is essentially two guitars in one, providing the same classic humbucker tones and authentic acoustic sounds as the original P22 now with the added versatility of PRS’ prized tremolo bridge.

The P22 Trem’s voicing, EQ, layout and feel as well as the redesigned PRS/LR Baggs piezo board are all maintained in this trem-equipped model, and the materials and design of the bridge have also been upheld without sacrificing any proprietary specifications.

There are two output jacks on the P22 Trem, allowing guitarists to plug into their favorite electric or acoustic guitar amp or DI into a soundboard. By utilizing the separate blend control, the tone of the P22 Trem’s 57/08 pickups can also be combined with acoustic sounds through a single output.

Starting with the tried-and-true combination of a figured maple top, a mahogany back and neck and a rosewood fretboard, the P22 Trem looks as good as it sounds. For more information and to watch a demo video, visit www.prsguitars.com/p22trem.

The Retromatic Guitar from Peerless

January 10, 2013 By GuitarDaddy

Peerless Guitar has announced a new line of small-bodied, thinline guitars – the Retromatic series. Here are the details from the company:

The guitars come with a variety of options, either a single humbucker, or a combination of humbucker and P-90 pickups, with or without the 6-way varitone.

The bridge humbucker is wound vintage but hotter at 9.4k to give you that “crunch” when required and the neck P-90 Alnico V wound at 8.0k provides the clarity but with plenty of good, strong rock. The archtop contoured body consists of a mahogany sustain block and single “F” hole to retain that lively vibe while allowing you to perform with ease at high volume. The 628mm scaled neck consists of 22 polished frets.

Several retro finishes are available including silver, teal green, honey sunburst, ivory, black, gold, and candy apple red, finished in a combination of either black or aged white/black triple binding with nickel hardware.

These are really slick looking guitars – I love the vibe and will be checking them out personally when I travel to NAMM 2013 in a couple of weeks.
