Joe Bonamassa and Gary Koch at the Paramont Theatre

May 18th, 2013 No comments

I have been posting a few videos lately of Joe Bonamassa and his “invited guests” like Gary Hoey and Warren Haynes.

Then this afternoon I came across this video gem from when Joe invited Gary Koch of Wildwood Guitars to join him on stage at the Paramount Theatre last fall.

This video is as much about Gary as it is about Joe. Some serious chops on display here!

Gary’s first solo blasts off at 2:14. Enjoy!!

I have to say that I think it is awesome how Joe graciously shares his stage with other players. Clearly he has no fear of losing his audience – rather he enhances their concert experience. Thanks Joe – keep rocking!

The Strat in the Attic – Buy This Book!

May 17th, 2013 No comments

The Strat in the AtticGuitar sleuth and music-history detective Deke Dickerson tells the true tales of 50 thrilling rare guitar finds that will make guitarists green with envy.

A golden Fender Stratocaster hidden away in an attic for 30 years.

A sunburst Gibson Les Paul worth $100,000.

Jimi Hendrix’s Strat burned by the guitarist during a concert—and then mysteriously lost for decades.

The mint Fender Broadcaster forgotten under a bed in a neighbor’s house.

The 1960s Rickenbacker bought for $50 at a garage sale!

These days, classic vintage guitars can bring Ferrari and Porsche prices. Baby boomers who wish they’d been rock ’n’ roll stars have shot the market into the stratosphere for classic models.

As with automobiles, finding that classic guitar stashed away beneath a bed, in a closet, hidden away in an attic, or in the dusty corner of a guitar shop is the Holy Grail.

I am not insane! I just love my guitar…

I came across this image a few days ago and I keep going back to it because it speaks to me about our own unique and individual love of music.

Everyone has a favorite song or artist – you know…the one when it comes on the radio you have a hard time sitting still or not singing along… because it moves you?

We all gather here because we all love to play the guitar.  We play blues, rock, jazz, country, metal, acoustic, electric and bass.  We are all uniquely different but share a common passion for our instruments.

I always start tapping (read:stomping) my feet when I hear Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa or Eric Clapton play and go looking for a guitar whenever I hear those classic blues rock licks. And I can’t sit still when tempo gets above 115bpm…!

The trap we fall in is when we choose not to hear a certain genre of music because it is not “our genre”.

Writing this blog has opened my eyes to so many new artists and so many musical styles I may once have shut my ears to. Not any more. I want it all. Bring it on!

How about you? What guitar styles move you?

Gary Clark Jr. Proves the Blues Ain’t Dead…

May 17th, 2013 No comments

Gary Clark Jr is making serious impact with his unique take on blues and soul, earning iconic fans all the way from Eric Clapton to President Barack Obama.

While the Pres may be calling him “the future”, Gary’s bold guitar playing is rooted in the classic heritage of the blues. Something this jam (Exclusive for Total Guitar Magazine) at London’s Highbury Garage proves beyond doubt.

I dig it and its the first and now only R-9 with a fingerboard inlay.

I get it in a few days.

Looking forward to it.

Personally, I love it.

I don’t have a guitar with an inlay that says “GuitarDaddy”…yet.

Jealous.

Earlier this week, Joe invited Gary Hoey to join him for a ripping session of “Further On Down The Road” and now he goes and invites Warren Haynes to join him at the Beacon Theatre for a killer rendition of “Crossroads”.

Joe Bonamassa and Gary Hoey – The New Blues Brothers

May 14th, 2013 No comments

Here is a great video of Joe and Gary playing Further On Up The Road at the Wang Center in Boston May 10th, 2013.

I’m not sure this is the first time Gary Hoey and Joe Bonamassa shared the stage, but after watching these 2 guys jam back and forth, I hope they do it again real soon!

Don’t quit early on this – it really heats up all the way to the end!

An Interview With Gary Clark Jr.

May 3rd, 2013 No comments

Gary Clark JrLast week during the annual Crossroads Music Festival held at Madison Square Garden, Austin native and rising star Gary Clark Jr. stood out among a dozen of rock’s greatest guitarists as the man of the moment.

He was neither the fastest or loudest or most technically challenging player of the festival but he effortlessly made the greatest impact. Clark brought ineffable presence–excitement–and star-power to the stage.

Clark’s performances were clearly anticipated by the crowd. Organizer Eric Clapton has never shied away from praising unique talent and his endorsement of Clark over the last few years (along with a guest slot and standing ovations backstage from The Rolling Stones) has only added to the seemingly unstoppable momentum of Clark’s career.

Premier Guitar Review of the DBZ Diamond Hailfire

May 2nd, 2013 No comments

DBZ Diamond HailfireI took this photo of the DBZ Diamond Hellfire earlier this year at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, California.

Premier Guitar just posted an awesome review – including sound samples.

The new model is a cool twist on the Firebird/RD Artist template and though it might not be as radical looking as other DBZs, it packs a lot of bold style and authoritative tone in a relatively affordable axe.

The series includes two models—the solid-mahogany Hailfire ST and the Hailfire SM, which features though-body stringing, upgraded pickups, spalted maple top and flashier finishes.

The Hailfire’s debt to the Firebird is obvious both in its body profile and the raised center section. The construction, however, is very different from a Firebird.

Instead of a multi-ply walnut neck-through design, the Hailfire SM is built with a relatively light mahogany body that’s capped with a dramatically carved and striking spalted-maple top.
