Steve Vai – How To Be Successful – VIDEO

November 29th, 2010 No comments

Special thanks to Josh at Guitar Lifestyle for finding this video!

Josh posted this Steve Vai video from Guitar Center Sessions titled: “How to Be Successful” yesterday. I have watched it 3-4 times now and each time I hear a new golden nugget of advice that I did not hear before.

The level of achievement that we have at anything is a reflection of how well we were able to focus on it… The only thing that’s holding you back is the way you’re thinking… Playing the guitar is my “juice”. -Steve Vai

I enjoyed this so much that I decided to start my daily practice sessions by watching this video. It’s the perfect 5 minute introduction to help me prepare mentally and focus on my practice goals.

The video is a lesson about guitars as well as a lesson about life. If we can find it within ourselves to adopt this way of thinking, we will all be better guitarists…and people.

Thanks Steve and thanks Josh!

10 Reasons to Give Musical Instruments & Lessons This Holiday Season

November 28th, 2010 No comments

I will be attending NAMM in January and have been receiving a lot of information from them since my media registration was approved.

Recently they tweeted this list, and I thought it was worth of sharing with readers of TheGuitarBuzz.

Top 10 Reasons for Giving Musical Instruments and Lessons This Holiday Season

1. You’re never too old to learn how to play music – A common myth, but music can be learned at any age, and studies show that making music is a life-long skill that enriches the lives of children and adults

2. Making music relieves stress – Recreational music making has been scientifically proven to help reduce stress and reverse the body’s response to stress at the DNA level. With the holidays as one of the most stressful times of the year, making music or giving a gift for someone special to make music for you, can help reduce stress for an entire family

3. Making music fights off depression – Depression affects about 19 million people in the U.S.**, and with the holiday season as one of the most vulnerable times of the year, music making can make all the difference in keeping spirits uplifted

4. Enrich your holiday experience – and your life! – with music making – Whether gathering around the piano to play holiday tunes or caroling around the neighborhood, or dancing to live music at a holiday party, music making vibrantly brings the entire holiday experience to life

5. Use music to create lasting family traditions – Each family has its own traditions, but music making offers a new way for families to celebrate the festive season together. From playing a favorite tune on the piano or jamming on the drums with a rock n’ roll rendition of a classic holiday song, music-making can create unique traditions for generations to share

6. Playing music together promotes bonding – As families and friends come together during the holiday season, playing music offers an exciting way for everyone to join in on the fun, creating a sense of togetherness

7. High play value of musical instruments – The average cost that parents will spend on giving gifts to their kids is $200, with many kids tossing those gifts aside in a matter of months and moving on to the next fad. But with the gift of musical instruments, parents can give their kids a priceless pastime that will last for many years or a passion for music to last a lifetime

8. Cost comparison/savings over time – On average, Americans are expected to spend $638 on holiday shopping this year, according to a 2009 National Retail Federation Report. When compared to the average price of music lessons and pre-owned instruments, the cost of music making is typically less in comparison

9. Biggest regret most people have – According to a 2009 Gallup Survey, 85 percent of Americans who do not play a musical instrument say they wish they had learned to play–the holidays are a perfect time to make that wish come true. For example, Rob Thomas, acclaimed recording artist and songwriter, regrets not taking piano lessons

10. Unleash your inner rock star (or your child’s inner rocker!) – Take virtual music making with video games to the next level and let yourself or your kids develop their talent with a real musical instrument, just like their favorite bands and artists

Guitars and Guitarists Beautifully Captured on Canvas

November 21st, 2010 2 comments

It’s been a while since I posted anything to the “Guitar Art” category, but after finding the web site of Tom Noll with Creative Bone Artworks, I knew it was time.

Tom Noll - Creative Bone Artworks

I have seen many works of art that were based around guitars and guitar players, but nothing like this.

In my opinion, Tom has taken the artistic beauty of the guitar (and guitarist) to an entirely new level.

Tom’s work is not totally guitar based — it also includes sculptures, murals and custom design work.

But the guitar niche will serve him well if he continues to produce paintings like the ones found in “The Rock Series – Oil on Canvas“.

Check out his masterpiece portraits of Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Les Paul, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews, BB King, David Gilmour, Muddy Waters and The Rolling Stones.

Tom Noll Painting Carlos Santana

To purchase most of the paintings as prints, follow this link to… Artprints for Purchase. Tom had this to say about his recently completed portrait of Carlos Santana:

My Newest Art Print… I envisioned this image of Carlos for many months before the paint hit the canvas. During all of my years growing up with the music of the 70′s and beyond, Santana always was at the core of my favorites. -Tom Noll

Just in time for THE HOLIDAYS!

Happy Birthday Duane Allman!

November 20th, 2010 4 comments

Duane AllmanHoward Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 – October 29, 1971) was an American lead guitarist, co-founder of the southern rock group The Allman Brothers Band, and respected session musician. He is best remembered for his brief but influential tenure in that band, expressive slide guitar playing, and formidable improvisational skills.

A sought-after session musician both before and during his tenure with the band, Allman performed with such established stars as King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and Herbie Mann.

His contributions to the 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos went on to become a part of Rock history.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Allman at #2 in their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, second only to Jimi Hendrix.

His tone (achieved with a Gibson Les Paul and a 50-watt Marshall amplifier) was named one of the greatest guitar tones of all time by Guitar Player.

Happy Birthday Duane!

The Schecter Hellcat VI

November 20th, 2010 1 comment

I admit, I have G.A.S.

It’s hard for me to go more than 6 months without wanting a new guitar.

I have been looking for something kind of “hybrid-like” as well as something that would allow me to explore the possibilities of playing a few bass lines on some tracks I am working on…

I already own a Schecter C-1 E/A (it was my first electric guitar) and am quite fond of the brand. So when I found the demo below for their Hellcat VI – it seemed to fit the narrow niche I was trying to fill.

The Hellcat VI six string is not a guitar, bass or even a baritone in today’s terms. Instead, the Hellcat VI is designed to be an improvement of the 6-string bass instrument of the early 1960s used for those tick tack bass sounds made famous in Nashville studios. The 30 scale of the Hellcat VI is standard tuned, but one octave below a normal guitar.

String gauges will range from .025 to .095. Can you say piano wire??

Schecter says the guitar was built for the player whose is seeking a different voice but does not necessarily want to learn a new instrument (uh…that would be me).

The Schecter Hellcat VI has a tone that will cut through any mix. The 3 Duncan MH-102 mini-humbuckers are designed to give more brightness than a regular humbucker and more fatness than a single coil. Schecter Guitar Research says: If you are a guitar player who likes to hang out in the bass range, this may be the perfect choice.

So off to YouTube I went… looking for a product demo video… and this is what I found:

Note: After watching this, I AM SOLD!
Now I’m waiting for my lovely wife to ask: “Honey, what do you want for Christmas?” :-)

Relic Guitars? What’s The Appeal…? Part 2!

Fano Alt De Facto Relic Guitar

One year ago today I wrote a post titled: Relic Guitars? What’s The Appeal?

It was my personal attempt to try to understand what drives people to pay excessively high prices for guitars that appear to be used, worn out and trash-can ready.

Ironically, one year later, while I was casually perusing eBay (yes, it’s an addiction) and I came across the photo on the left.

The guitar has that certain vibe and actually looks pretty cool until a closer examination of the photo reveals the tremendous amount of excessive wear.

But wait! There’s more! Check out the FULL DESCRIPTION:

Fano Alt De Facto RB6 3-Tone Electric Guitar Brand NEW!

You mean to tell me that the photo on the left is a brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged guitar in its original packaging?

You can link to the actual eBay auction here – as long as it lasts.

So again I ask…the same question…Relic Guitars? What’s The Appeal?
